North Las Vegas, NV (June 15, 2009) – Fresh off the heels of Tiger Woods’ stunning, come-from-behind victory at the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio, and just days away from Tiger defending his crown at the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black, Upper Deck Authenticated (UDA) will be giving sports fans the chance to own polo shirts worn by Woods during the first three rounds of his championship march during last year’s U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Tiger Woods Foundation. Not only is this the first time that tournament-worn items of Tiger’s have been offered from a Major in which he won, but fans and collectors will now have the opportunity to own a piece of memorabilia from what Tiger and golf writers alike have called among his greatest victories ever.
“As Tiger’s exclusive autographed memorabilia partner, we are excited to offer fans a chance to own three unique pieces of sports history,” said Tim Muret, vice president of UDA, the Upper Deck Company’s memorabilia division. “Each of the three shirts provides a chapter to the incredible story of Tiger’s amazing victory, which as we found out the next day, was one in which he was literally playing on a broken leg. These three historical pieces will certainly be the ultimate collection showpieces for years to come.”
The three shirts secured directly from Woods and autographed as part of UDA’s patented five-step authentication process will be sold beginning on Tuesday, June 16, at www.UpperDeckStore.com to coincide with the 2009 U.S. Open. UDA has just released a video of Woods signing the threes shirts and providing a brief recap of each round, which is available for viewing at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYITO1nAJDk.
In addition to being autographed, each of the three shirts was hand-inscribed by Woods with “2008 U.S. Open” and the corresponding round in which he wore it. Paired with the second- and third-ranked players in the world – Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott, respectively – Woods opened with a 1-over-par 72 on the tough Torrey Pines course. In the second round, Woods shot a 3-under 68 with birdies on four of the first five holes. During Saturday’s third round, Woods made two incredible eagles on 13 and 18. The first-, second-, and third-round shirts will be listed for sale at $30,000, $40,000, and $50,000, respectively.
In the final round on Sunday, Woods made birdie on 18 to tie Rocco Mediate and set up a thrilling, 19-hole playoff on Monday in what would become one of the most exciting majors of all time. The traditional red shirt Woods wore in the final round and playoff remains in Tiger’s personal collection.
